Highlights of Penang (Malaysia) – Khoo Kongsi Chinese Clan House

Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, commonly known as Khoo Kongsi, is one of Penang’s most remarkable Chinese clan temples and the largest Hokkien clanhouse in Malaysia. Located in the historic heart of George Town, it was established by the Khoo clan, whose ancestors migrated from Fujian, China. The present temple, completed in 1906 after an earlier structure was destroyed by fire, is renowned for its exquisite carvings, ornate roof decorations, and traditional Southern Chinese architecture. Beyond serving as a place of worship, Khoo Kongsi functioned as a social, educational, and welfare centre for clan members, reflecting the important role of Chinese clan associations in Penang’s history and cultural development.
