Hotels with History – The Metropole Hanoi (Vietnam)

The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is one of Vietnam’s most iconic luxury hotels and a landmark of Hanoi’s French colonial heritage. Opened in 1901 as the Grand Métropole Hotel by French entrepreneurs André Ducamp and Gustave-Émile Dumoutier, it quickly became the city’s premier destination for diplomats, writers, and travelers. During Vietnam’s turbulent twentieth-century history, the hotel was renamed the Thong Nhat (Reunification) Hotel and served as a government guesthouse. Following extensive restoration in the early 1990s, it regained its historic Metropole name and was reborn as the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. Today, the hotel is celebrated for its elegant colonial architecture, wartime bomb shelter, and distinguished guests, including Charlie Chaplin, Graham Greene, and numerous world leaders.
