The Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Hotel is one of Malaysia’s most iconic heritage hotels, located along the seafront in George Town, Penang. Renowned for its colonial architecture, luxurious accommodations, and historical significance, the hotel has long been regarded as the “Grande Dame of Penang.” Situated within the UNESCO World Heritage city of George Town, the E&O remains a symbol of the island’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
The hotel’s origins date back to 1884 when the Armenian Sarkies Brothers established the Eastern Hotel. Due to its immediate success, they opened the adjacent Oriental Hotel in 1885. The two establishments were later merged to form the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, which quickly became one of Southeast Asia’s premier luxury hotels.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the E&O became a social hub for colonial society and a preferred destination for wealthy travellers journeying through Asia. It hosted numerous distinguished guests, including writers and celebrities such as Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, Noel Coward, Douglas Fairbanks, and Hermann Hesse. By the 1920s, the hotel had expanded significantly and was advertised as “The Premier Hotel East of the Suez.”
The E&O continues to be one of Asia’s most celebrated heritage hotels, combining over 140 years of history with contemporary hospitality.
