The Oriental Bangkok is widely regarded as one of Asia’s most historic luxury hotels and is among the oldest continuously operating hotels in Thailand. Its origins date back to the 1860s, when Bangkok (then Siam) began opening to international trade and foreign travelers required accommodation along the Chao Phraya River.
1974 – The owners of The Mandarin acquired a major stake in The Oriental, Bangkok. This led to the creation of the combined brand name “Mandarin Oriental.”
2008 – The hotel officially changed its name from “The Oriental, Bangkok” to “Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.”
The hotel has long been associated with famous writers including Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Graham Greene, and Noël Coward. Its historic Authors’ Wing and Authors’ Lounge commemorate this literary heritage.
