Koh Kret – an Island in the river!
Koh Kret is a small artificial island located in the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi Province, just north of Bangkok. Despite being only a short distance from Thailand’s capital, the island feels remarkably separate from the modern city — preserving a slower rhythm of life shaped by river culture, Mon heritage, traditional crafts, temples, and local food traditions.
Today, Koh Kret is considered one of the most culturally distinctive and accessible day-trip destinations near Bangkok. Created during the Ayutthaya period when a canal was dug to shorten a bend in the Chao Phraya River. Over time, the canal widened and effectively transformed the surrounding land into an island.
Although urban development surrounds the area, Koh Kret itself remains largely pedestrian-oriented, with narrow pathways replacing roads and cars.
One of the defining characteristics of Koh Kret is its long-established Mon population.The Mon are one of mainland Southeast Asia’s oldest ethnic groups and played a major role in the early cultural development of regions that include: Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Many Mon families settled around the Chao Phraya River centuries ago, and Koh Kret became one of the most important Mon cultural communities in Thailand. Even today, aspects of Mon identity remain visible in everyday life on the island.
Koh Kret is especially famous for its pottery. The island’s pottery tradition is associated with Mon craftsmanship and has become one of its most recognizable cultural symbols.
The absence of cars across most of the island strongly shapes the visitor experience. Narrow concrete lanes weave through villages, markets, cafés, and temple grounds, creating an intimate and human-scaled environment.
On weekends, Koh Kret transforms into a vibrant social destination. Despite larger crowds, the market still maintains a local, community-oriented feeling compared to many urban tourist markets.
